General Description
The GUIDE Paraprofessional is primarily responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating active and passive programs in the areas of involvement, diversity, and education for Residence Life staff and students. The GUIDE Paraprofessional is also responsible for serving as a liaison to a Residence Hall staff, working with the Resident Assistants (RAs), Resident Directors (RDs) and Assistant Resident Directors (ARDs) to provide support in the areas of programming, training, professional development, and recognition for the entire hall staff. Specific responsibilities include participation in staff meetings, training, retreats, and various developmental opportunities, maintaining office hours and performing administrative duties, and working closely with Residence Hall staffs, student organizations, and Student Diversity Programs and Services to develop collaborative programs. The GUIDE Paraprofessional works in a team environment, is directly supervised by a GUIDE Graduate Coordinator, and carries out the vision and mission of GUIDE, the Office of Residence Life, and Housing & Dining Services at Colorado State University.
Responsibilities
Active Programming
- Develop, implement, and evaluate Residence Life-wide programs that address residents’ academic, diversity, involvement, community building, and transition concerns.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate small scale programs focusing on involvement, diversity, and education topics.
- Take charge in at least one large-scale program within the term of employment.
Passive Programming
- Research, design, and create Residence Life-wide bulletin boards to be displayed in each residence hall.
- Research, design, and create themed display cases at the begining of each semester to be displayed campus-wide throughout the year.
- Brainstorm other ways to implement passive programs to residents.
Liaison Role
- Sit on at least one residence hall staff to provide support in the areas of programming, training, professional development, and recognition for the hall staff and residents.
- Work closely with the RD and ARD(s) to develop a professional relationship and determine the best way to contribute to the hall staff.
- Work collaboratively with RAs to develop, implement, and evaluate hall-specific programs and events.
- Attend residence hall staff meetings, retreats, programs and other events to build rapport, trust, and a supportive environment.
- Build connections for collaborative programming with a variety of campus and community organizations.
Hours and Meetings
- This position is a 15 hour per week position, which includes attendance at weekly Full Staff Meetings, Area Staff Meetings, Contact Meetings with Supervisor, Hall Staff Meetings, and program preparation office hours.
- Other meetings and hours may include: late night and weekend programming, campus-wide committee meetings, program planning meetings with professional staff and faculty, and contact meetings with community leaders and business partners.
Training and Development
- Develop, facilitate, and evaluate workshops during the summer and winter Residence Life Student Staff Training Sessions.

- Working with your GUIDE Liaison
- As well as other topics as assigned and desired
- Provide training as necessary for hall-specific RA staffs, and other campus offices as part of the Liaison role.
Evaluation
- Actively assess programs for effectiveness, student interest, student needs, and record keeping purposes.
- Utilize the results from the Involvement Opportunities questionnaire about involvement interests of the current on campus population.
- Participate in evaluations of peers and supervisors.
Qualifications
- Knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:
- Social and Involvement Programming
- Social Justice and Diversity Programming
- Leadership and Educational Programming - An interest and willingness to learn more in all three areas mentioned above.
- Understanding of the importance of programming in the residence halls.
- Ability to work in a team setting.
- Have a positive attitude, displayed dependability, and a strong work ethic.
- Be willing to work with a flexible schedule including day, night, and weekend hours.
- Ability to form and keep positive relationships with RAs, RDs ARDs, and other Residence Life staff members.
- Ability to represent GUIDE in a professional, positive, and appropriate manner.
- Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to diversity.
Requirements
- Must be a full-time student enrolled at Colorado State University (CSU) during the period of employment, and able to work 15 hours per week.
- Must have and maintain a 2.75 GPA throughout the application process and term of employment.
- Must support and follow CSU policies and procedures, and local, state, and federal laws.
- Must act as a positive role model for other students and support the vision and mission of GUIDE, the Office of Residence Life, and Housing & Dining Services at CSU.
- Must be able to attend various staff meetings on a weekly basis.
- Must be able to perform other duties as assigned.
Remuneration
- This is an hourly, live-out, student employment position, paid up to 30 hours per pay period or 15 hours per week.
- Pay scale is based on years of experience in the position.
- Starting pay scale is approximately $8.99 per hour and subject to change according to budgetary allocations.
- May not work more than 10 hours outside of the GUIDE position unless discussed and approved by supervisor.
- Student employees may not exceed more than 40 hours of combined on campus work per week.
Supervision
GUIDE Paraprofessionals are supervised by a GUIDE Graduate Coordinator.
Terms of Release
Failure to perform agreement responsibilities, failure to support and adhere to University and Residence Life policies, or failure to maintain the minimum academic requirement as described above will constitute grounds for probation or termination. These are at the sole discretion of the GUIDE Coordinators and the Assistant Director for Residence Life – GUIDE.
