Housing & Dining Services is committed to sustainability. Through innovative programs and outreach initiatives we work to reduce waste, preserve natural resources, and support environmentally friendly building and purchasing practices. Here are a few of our initiatives:
Sign Up for Green Power!
Run your CSU residence hall room or university apartment on renewable electricity!
- In 2009, CSU placed 9th in RecycleMania, a national recycling competition among more than 500 colleges and universities across the country.
- The new Ram's Horn Dining Center at the Academic Village features a pulper that creates a compostable by-product of all kitchen and food waste, reducing the waste stream by 70% and reducing water usage by 150,000 gallons a month.
- The purchase of 3,023,787 kWh of renewable energy for the 2008/2009 academic year for all public areas of the department including dining centers, administrative offices, lobbies, and lounges.
- CSU was one of the 1st universities in the country to offer on-campus residents the option to purchase green power for their residence hall room or university apartment.
- Used cooking oil from our dining centers is collected and recycled to create biodiesel and other products.
- Housing & Dining Services provides a recycling bin in each residence hall room and university apartment to encourage students to recycle.
- The Leave It Behind Program, a donation program that collects unwanted items from students during move out, collected a record 22 tons in 2009 for local charities.
