More about this year’s recipients:
Bonnie Brown is a junior Liberal Arts Major, concentrating in Latin America International Studies and gaining a minor in Spanish. Ms. Brown’s international experience at CSU is centered around the international service learning projects with which she has participated through the CSU Campus Ministry’s Geller Center for Spiritual Development. She has built orphanages in Guatemala, playgrounds in Belize and tutored children in Honduras. She will lead a group of her peers on a trip back to Honduras this May in order to continue the relationship with the children. Ms. Brown has acknowledged that her language skills, comprehension of the cultural differences and the history that has shaped Honduras, as well as the rest of Latin America, helped her to be more culturally sensitive and be more understanding to the circumstances with which her group faced. These components are the reason the Griswold Scholarship exists. As one can see from the observation of one of her recommenders, “These activities have impacted Bonnie significantly in her daily life and given her enthusiasm and knowledge to continue passionately in her field of study.” Ms. Brown hopes to utilize the scholarship to help save money for medical school in order to continue making a difference in the lives of children in the countries she has provided service.
Kristin Osani is a sophomore International Studies major focusing on the Asian Studies with a minor in the Japanese Language. Ms. Osani has played an active role in both the Japan Club and the Japanese Student Association her arrival at CSU: She attends the Japanese Language Camp every semester, helped with the Gateway to Asia program for the past two years, and she participated in a dance in the Japanese portion of the World Unity Fair stage show in 2007. Recently, she played the role of Hermia in the Japanese translation of the Mid-Summer’s Night Dream in which she was one of four actors who spent countless hours learning classical Japanese dance for this play. In addition, Ms. Osani will compete in the Japan Cup competition in Denver this month. Her recommenders agree that Ms. Osani has a high aptitude and enjoyment for learning, as one states “She stands out in class and I often prepare extra work/exercises just for her so she will not be bored..she is truly gifted and absorbs everything like a sponge,” and the other says “I fully expect her to continue to shine as one of the rising stars of the Colorado State University Japanese program.” Ms. Osani’s plans are to utilize the scholarship to study abroad in Japan next spring and to further her Japanese language skills and cultural understanding.
