Undergraduate Programs in the College of Natural Sciences

Introduction To and Goals Of the URI

Student in a research lab. Undergraduate research motivates students to learn more and prepares students for careers in modern science better than any other activity pursued during college years. Universities and colleges alike should encourage undergraduate students to participate in research as an integral part of their college experience.

For most students, undergraduate research participation is just that - participation. However, given the opportunity, many students can achieve significant research results. High expectations and a serious commitment by students and faculty alike are required in order to achieve the maximum research productivity and effectiveness of this integrated program.

Long-term undergraduate research projects provide significant benefits to both students and faculty mentors. If students receive financial and intellectual support, they can commit significant time to a project, which increases the impact of their research.

The College of Natural Sciences sponsors and promotes undergraduate research by our students through two interrelated programs: Undergraduate Research Institute (URI) and the Preparing Future Leaders in Science (PFLS) project. The URI provides students with an interactive search engine and database of research projects (both disciplinary and interdisciplinary) that are available on campus. The Preparing Future Leaders in Science project is a stand-alone program promoting interdisciplinary research in the physical and mathematical sciences. Funding is available to support students in their research and training. If interested, please contact the College of Natural Sciences Dean's Office at 970-491-6864.
